SAGE kicks off spring class offerings at UMPI

    A University of Maine at Presque Isle program that serves local residents over 50 and believes in “learning for life” will host its spring kick-off event at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 14, in the Campus Center.

    Membership in Seniors Achieving Greater Education is $15 per semester or $30 for the year. There are additional fees for field trips and some hands-on courses. Refreshments will be served at 10 a.m., followed by brief presentations by the learning facilitators. Registration for classes will follow the presentations. FMI, contact Mary Lawrence at 768-9502.

UMPI celebrates Aroostook’s 175th anniversary

    The Friends of the Aroostook County Historical Center and the University of Maine at Presque Isle will be hosting a celebration of the 175th anniversary of the incorporation of Aroostook County on Sunday, March 16, from 12:30-2:30 p.m. in the UMPI library. Honorary guest, U.S. Sen. Susan M. Collins, will lead a ceremonial opening of a potato barrel time capsule that was sealed in 1989. Earle Shettleworth, Maine state historian, will give a special presentation on Aroostook County history. This special event will include historical exhibits, County musicians and singers, County-themed refreshments, and some of the library’s special collections, which houses many County historical records, will be on display as well. This event is free and open to the public.
