CHESTER – Ralph William Day, 76, husband of Shirley (Graham) Day, died March 8, 2014, at his home. He was born June 3, 1937, in Presque Isle, the son of James Day Sr. and Mary Ann (Tilley) Day.
Ralph was a graduate of Presque Isle High School, class of 1955. He played basketball under Coach Hanscom and, during his senior year, became the first inductee in the 1000 point club. He is still the all-time leading scorer, a record that has yet to be broken, even after the three point line was introduced. After high school, Ralph joined the U.S. Air Force. He served as Airplane Log Clerk at Loring Air Force Base, 42nd D Bomber Wing. After an honorable discharge, he became a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Presque Isle. In 1973 he moved to Houlton and attended Ricker College where he got his Associates Degree in business management. He then moved to Gorham and worked his way up to Human Resource Director for the Postal Service, retiring in 1992. He was known as being very helpful assisting and guiding people in the postal service to further their careers in PEDC. Retiring in 1992, he moved to Chester in 1998 where he and his wife enjoyed their retirement years. He looked forward to visits with his grandchildren, and seeing his daughter’s camper pull into the driveway every summer. He was a very giving, thoughtful man who always put his family first.
In addition to his wife, Shirley, of Chester, he is survived by four children, Darlene Colcord, of Colorado, Sharon Mosley and Thomas, of Windham, Tammy Ryder and Lawrence, of Buxton and Robin Day, of Westbrook; five siblings, Thomas Day, of North Carolina, Dale Day and Debbie, Bertha Weaver and Guy, Viola Weaver and Mack, all of Presque Isle and Edna Murray and Skip, of Bangor; eight grandchildren, Anthony Fishencord, Meghan Wood, Kyle Fishencord, Andrew Mosley, Sarah Hanf, Jason Ryder, Emily Ryder and Todd Ryder; nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, James Day, Jr, Preston Day and Stephen Day.
Funeral services will be private. Interment will be in Maine Veterans Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Penobscot Valley Humane Society. To sign an online guest register and to leave written condolences, please visit www.clayfuneralhome.com.
