‘Emotionally intelligent’ traffic sign contest

being held in Star City

PRESQUE ISLE — City officials are excited to announce a new initiative to promote pedestrian, bike and vehicle safety in Presque Isle’s downtown area.

An “emotionally intelligent” traffic sign contest is being held as part of a multifaceted approach to slow vehicular traffic on city streets, enhance driver attentiveness, and ultimately create a safer place for pedestrian, bicycle and vehicular traffic.
“This is a fantastic way for us to engage residents in a friendly contest that will enhance safety in the heart of our downtown,” said Deputy City Manager Martin Puckett. “We look forward to seeing lots of creative ideas that will really grab people’s attention!”
With the contest, children and the public would create their own emotionally intelligent signage. Signs bearing slogans such as “We know your car is fast, slow down” and “You will stop for a duck, but you won’t stop for a child?” are just some of the unique ways communities have raised awareness and educated residents on pedestrian and vehicular safety.
Officials invite Presque Isle residents of all ages to design a sign encouraging safety in the downtown area. The winning sign(s) will be placed at each end of the downtown area on Main Street.
Submissions for this contest should be on 8.5-inch by 11-inch letter size paper, can be in any medium and must be received no later than Friday, April 18 at 4:30 p.m. Be sure to include your name, address and contact information. Entries can be mailed or dropped off to the third floor of City Hall, located at 12 Second St. in Presque Isle.
