Local Girl Scouts are looking for ways to answer the needs of the community, both large and small. If you are a non-profit organization and need volunteers to help with your projects, call 425-9020.
The troop is full of junior high girls looking to volunteer 50 hours worth of community service to earn their Silver Award. The troop can help with any number of activities in Blaine, Bridgewater and Mars Hill.
Promotion
Brig. Gen. James D. Campbell, the adjutant general for Maine, has announced the promotion of Gregory Cousins to PFC. Gregory is with the National Guard’s 185th Engineer Company. Congratulations, Greg!
School registration
SAD 42 will be holding registration for the 4 and 5 year old programs for the 2014-15 school year on Friday, April 11, at the Fort Street School, open to 4- and 5-year-old children of the Mars Hill, Blaine and Bridgewater area.
Pre-school students must be 4 years of age on or before Oct. 15. Students 5 years of age on or before that date are eligible for kindergarten. Call 429-8514 or 429-8515 to schedule an appointment to register your child. Proof of immunizations and an original birth certificate are required at the time of registration.
If you are not a legal parent, a copy of guardianship papers (probate court) must be completed before registration.
Aroostook Health Center
Upcoming events for the week of March 26 through April 1 include: Wednesday will feature the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Table Tennis at 9:30 a.m. and Crossword Puzzles at 1:30 p.m. Thursday will feature the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m., Horse Racing at 1:30 p.m. and Free Baptist at 6:30 p.m. Friday will feature shopping at Walmart at 8:30 a.m. and Doctors‘ Day Recognition at 1:30 p.m. Saturday will feature Bingo at 1:30 p.m. Sunday will be a free day. Monday will feature Nail Beautiful at 10 a.m., Cribbage Games at 1:30 p.m. and Gospel Group at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday will feature the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and Card Games at 1:30 p.m. All of these activities are subject to change. If you would like to volunteer to help with any of these activities, call Connie or Vicki at 768-4915.
Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on March 18 at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center.
The guest speakers were Eric and Elaine Hendrickson. Eric spoke about the ski school that they run at Bigrock ski area. This year there were 75 kids that signed up for lessons, with 35-50 typically showing up on Saturdays for a two-hour lesson. They divide up the students according to their ability. Greens are those that have never been on skis. Yellows are the next step, with students learning about safely, helping each other, playing games to learn skills and skiing together. Oranges are ready to learn the skills they need to handle any of the slopes on the mountain. Reds are the most advanced. There are also lessons for those that want to snowboard, with students needing to take the same steps as skiers.
The Hendricksons believe that skiing is a great sport for kids to learn as it teaches them a skill they can enjoy throughout their life. In addition to skiing every day they can, Eric and Elaine enjoy bike tours and caving.
BINGO
The William Cousins Post 118 of the American Legion in Mars Hill hosts a Bingo Night every Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Legion building on Silver Street. There will be cash prizes and concessions.
