PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The United Way of Aroostook will be hosting a Spring Fling Saturday at the Aroostook Centre Mall.

According to Elaine Sipe, project manager for the UWA, the event will be held between Trader Joe’s and Sears from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. March 29.
“The Spring Fling will have something for everyone,” said Sipe. “We’re going to have free train rides, the first 100 people can get a free 5-inch by 7-inch framed photo taken with the Easter Bunny, and we’re going to have a petting zoo with chickens, bunnies and mini goats.”
In addition, Philbrick’s Bakery will have food for sale such as hotdogs, chips, soda, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and cookies.
“The Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) will also have representatives there to speak to anyone interested in setting up a college investment plan — perhaps for themselves or their children — at no cost,” said Sipe. “That service is for Maine residents only, and if family members are setting up an investment plan for a child, they need to have that child’s Social Security number. You don’t have to come bringing any money to start an investment plan — just the Social Security number. It’s that simple.
“If you’re really interested in talking to FAME representatives, you can set up an appointment by calling the mall at 764-2616 or you can just show up,” she said.
People also have the opportunity to get their taxes done Saturday for free.
“The United Way has IRS-certified volunteers doing tax prep for low- to middle-income people including those over 60 and those with individual or combined income under $51,000,” said Sipe. “At the mall, we’re going to have a Super Saturday where people can get their taxes done at no cost.”
To make an appointment, call the UWA office at 764-5197.
“The Spring Fling will be a fun time for families with a lot of different activities going on, and it’s an opportunity to learn more about funding higher education,” said Sipe. “I would encourage everyone to come Saturday and enjoy the event.”
