Letter tells of Alaskan earthquake — Mrs. Byron Stewart of Houlton received a letter from her daughter Marjorie, stationed with her husband, M/Sgt. Robert Weyburn at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska during the March 28 earthquake. “The earthquake started. At first I thought it was just a tremor, but then I could tell…everything shaking and rattling. Could hardly make it. I hollered for the boys and Bob to get out… The ground seemed to heave all over. It buckled the road in front of the house. Robert’s car hit ours. The cement had a huge break in the sidewalk. I came in and the kitchen was a mess… We immediately started cleaning… Kept warm by huddling in the kitchen. Had the parakeet in there with us.”
