United Methodist Women
The United Methodist Women of Mars Hill met on April 7 in the church vestry at noon with eight members and one guest, Elaine’s sister Mary Valadez of Newport News, Va., attending. After the food blessing, sandwiches and drinks were enjoyed. Daisy, co-hostess, provided delicious Easter-decorated cupcakes and ice cream for dessert.
After an hour of socializing, President Donna opened the business meeting. She led all in the Purpose Pledge and Prayer. The secretary’s report was given by Clara and approved as read. Diane gave the treasurer’s report, which was accepted as read. Members voted to send $100 to one of the missions in Nicaragua to buy a sewing machine for one of their missions projects.
Joan Walsh read a very interesting letter from a former UMW member from Easton, who now lives in Iowa. Dorothy Beaton is a very nice and respected person. We loved hearing from her.
A special thanks to Joan and Blinn Boone, who cleaned the church kitchen without help. They did a great job.
Donna announced that on Saturday, April 12, the UMW Sub District meeting will be held at the Presque Isle Methodist Church. Dixie Shaw from Catholic Charities will be the guest speaker. Each one is asked to bring something for the food cupboard at Catholic Charities. Donna will be giving a report on our local UMW accomplishments and mission work for the past year and our acquiring our five-point Star Unit Requirement.
The meeting was turned over to the two program chairpersons: Marie Hewitt and Daisy Campbell. They each read very appropriate and humorous selections that were enjoyed by all.
After the benediction the meeting was adjourned. Members attending included: Marie Hewitt, Daisy Campbell, Donna Brewer, Joan Walsh, Joan Boone, Diane Ketchum, Elaine Bailey and Clara Hussey.
Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on April 8 at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. Rotarian Steve Hitchcock gave an interesting presentation about the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky., which has around 146,000 visitors per year. The sky dome area is 140 feet in diameter with many special cars on display around the perimeter and in the center of the dome.
On Feb. 12 this year, a sinkhole opened up under the dome area and eight cars went down into the hole. Between April 1-8, seven of the cars had been recovered, and the eighth had been located. They will all be restored, as well as the dome’s floor. The sinkhole will be checked before it is filled in so the floor can be rebuilt. Restoration costs are expected to reach up to $1 million dollars.
BINGO
