As an annual service project, the Fort Fairfield Middle/High School National Honor Society Chapter is responsible for organizing and facilitating Fall Fun Fest for the youth of Fort Fairfield. On Oct. 26, 2013, over 100 youth paraded in costume to the community center for an afternoon of games, music, prizes, face painting and pumpkin painting.
The event was made possible due to generous support from NHS members, local businesses, the PTO, the Chamber of Commerce, the Knights of Columbus and other local organizations.
The Fort Fairfield NHS chapter also raised money through a “Penny War” during Spirit Week and a potato sale at the annual Agribusiness Trade Fair. These fundraisers will help to support two Ethiopian boys through the Wide Horizons for Children Program. The chapter will also be making a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project as part of the Regional NHS service project.
In late March, the local NHS chapter had the privilege of hosting the spring regional convention for the Northern region of the Maine National Honor Society. There was a huge turnout, with over 200 students attending and the event was a huge success.
Local chapters, including Presque Isle, Caribou and Easton attended, as well schools as far north as Madawaska and as far south as Katahdin and Southern Aroostook. When the schools arrived, a business meeting was held including discussion of the events of the state convention held earlier in the month.
Next, progress on the regional service project was shared. The region raised $2,965 for the Wounded Warrior Project and donated $200 to the Heather & Liam Connection. Following the presentation of the Wounded Warrior check to Barbara Hayslett, new regional officers were elected.
After the business meeting is when the real fun began. Fifteen different activities were set up which centered around a Disney theme. Events included Disney trivial pursuit, beach volleyball (Lilo & Stitch), build your own castle, and fill the teapot relay race (Beauty & The Beast).
The convention could not have been such a success without the help of local businesses, Students Baking A Living, Tiger Business Lab, the SAD 20 School Nutrition Program, FFMHS staff members and parent volunteers.
