UMPI’s Reed Gallery to host reception

for ‘The Man Behind the Owls’

The University of Maine at Presque isle’s Reed Fine Art Gallery will present the work of the late Bernard Langlais, “The Man Behind the Owls,” from May 2 through June 14.

The gallery is proud to debut its recent acquisition from the Langlais Estate in this exhibit.
As a gift from the Kohler Foundation in Wisconsin, Reed Gallery was awarded the “learning collection” of the acclaimed artist, making UMPI the research institution for Langlais’s work. The collection has over 800 drawings, sketches and sketchbooks done during his lifetime, including the loose-leaf sketch of what became our “Owls” sculpture — recently restored on campus.
The exhibition also features a selection from the 30 Langlais sculptures acquired by the UMPI Art Collection. This exhibition shows the wide talent and career of the artist, whose last sculpture before his death was our “Owls.”
The public is invited to view the exhibition throughout the show’s run and gather for a gallery reception, being held in conjunction with the Presque Isle First Friday Art Walk, on Friday, May 2, from 5-7 p.m. Heather Sincavage will do a curator’s talk at 5:30 p.m. about Langlais and the new collection. This event is free and open to the public.
The Reed Fine Art Gallery is open Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed Sundays and university holidays. FMI, call Heather Sincavage at 768-9442 or email heather.sincavage@umpi.edu.
