Mrs. Rachel Fowler remembered — The sudden death of Mrs. Rachel Fowler, age 73 years, widow of the late C. H. Fowler which occurred April 21 at the home of her son, was a decided shock to her many friends in town. Probably no woman in Houlton enjoyed a larger acquaintance than did Mrs. Fowler, her years of experience as proprietress of a popular boarding house in the town gave an opportunity of meeting many people whom she always remembered. Her home, during its existence, was the only home many of our townsmen ever had.
Plot to dynamite railroad — The advertisement reads: Plot to Dynamite B. & A. R. R. Bridges. Dastardly scheme to endanger lives and destroy property has been brought to light. Will Offer Large Reward. “From the information coming from Aroostook county it appears that dynamiters are preparing to commit wicked depredations against the property of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad, which if carried out, will reenact the dynamiting atrocities that have taken place in the west…”

REGIONAL WINNER — Competing against students from seven schools from southern Aroostook and northern Penobscot counties, Miss Irma Comins of Houlton High School won first-place honors at the annual Regional Spear Speaking Contest and qualified to move on to the state finals in Augusta.

Motor troubles talk at Ingraham Garage — Seventy-five dealers and servicemen from throughout all Aroostook County attended a clinic at Ingraham’s Garage Tuesday evening conducted by Marvin H. Anderson, service engineer the American Hammered Piston Ring Co. to give a technical talk on motor troubles of today. He demonstrated the Koetherizing machine, recently installed at Ingraham’s, a new method of resizing pistons.

NEW COACH — Terrance X. Spurling, who for the past four years has been teaching and coaching at Aroostook Central Institute in Mars Hill, has been appointed as teacher of physical education and coach of the boys varsity basketball team at Houlton High School. An Ellsworth native and University of Maine graduate, he would also act as the school’s athletic director.
Sugar beets to sweeten County’s future — The agricultural future and economic outlook for Aroostook County took a sharp turn upwards Friday with the announcement that Maine had been awarded a sugar beet allotment for the 1966 growing season. The allotment, awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is for 33,000 acres of sugar beets.
At the drive-in — Playing this week at the Borderland Drive-In, North Road, Houlton are: “Drums of Africa,” starring Frankie Avalon; “For Love or Money,” with Kirk Douglas, Mitzi Gaynor and Gig Young; “Rampage,” featuring Robert Mitchum and Elsa Martinelli; and “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father,” starring Glenn Ford and Shirley Jones.

Archers group under way — The Southern Aroostook Archers have gotten under way, thanks to the cooperation of the Houlton Recreational Department, the generosity of local businesses and industries and many hours of work by members of the Southern Aroostook Archers Club. The club has held four indoor practice shoots and offers memberships (single and family) giving privileges both as a southern Aroostook archer and a northern Maine bow hunter. McKernan and Snowe to attend Houlton ball — The Houlton Chamber of Commerce has announced the official schedule for Governor John McKernan’s visit to Houlton on Saturday, May 6. The governor and Congresswoman Olympia Snowe will be attending the Governor’s Ball to be held in celebration of Aroostook County’s Sesquicentennial anniversary on that day.
