To the editor:
We the students of the Breaking Ground program would like to thank all of the businesses that have generously sponsored us in various ways this year. Also, Houlton Rotary gave us $500 toward the greenhouse, and Dale Flewelling of the Friends of Aroostook allowed us to pick vegetables for our classroom use and for harvesting seed. Bart and Linda Peters donated the grow light for the winter months.
Community members have purchased more tree seedlings for our Sponsor A Tree program, aimed at building up the orchard. We have had many supporters as the students sold dilly beans, raffle tickets, and plant seedlings. Countless others have donated jars, tools, seed packets, etc. We appreciate their contributions and enthusiasm.
We also received a Sow It Forward grant, sponsored by the Kitchen Gardens International. These funds allowed us to purchase the hand tools, soil block makers, and seed starter kits.
If there was anything left for us to request from our wish list, we would like to solicit canning jars, lids, pots for transplanting seedlings, more fruit and berry trees/bushes, pruning shears, buckets, materials to build large signs, shelves, fans for inside the greenhouse, wheelbarrows, bird netting, fencing and materials to build trellises.
