To the editor:
I am hoping you will allow me to tout and promote the upcoming Aroostook County Polar Dip for Special Olympics on Sunday, May 4 at the Long Lake Sporting Club in Sinclair. The Dip has been postponed twice due to the unusual winter we have had this year.
Last year the late spring caused a little different approach to the dip. Usually the thaw opens up some water between the shore and the ice, allowing participants to run or dive in from shore and then run out. Last year there was no open water so we had to cut a 15- by 20-foot hole through three feet of ice. No easy task, but two chain saws, a tractor, and a good team of a dozen individuals “got ‘er done” and people got their dip in.
This year deep snow and slush and thick ice prevented us from cutting a hole in the ice. So I would just like to remind and invite everyone in The County to come on up to the Sporting Club this Sunday for the Polar Dip. Registration is at 11 a.m. and the Dip starts at noon. You can register, donate, do the dip, or all three. You can dive right in or just dip the big toe. All Polar Dippers will also receive complimentary chicken stew and ploys courtesy of the Sporting Club.
It would be great to see lots of participants, Special Olympians and their parents, relatives, and friends there, as well as lots of spectators and supporters.
