BANGOR, Maine — The Caribou and Washburn track and field teams had to take a road trip down Interstate 95 for their first regular season meet Friday.
The teams joined several other schools from throughout eastern Maine for a meet held at Cameron Stadium and hosted by the Bangor Rams.
The Vikings were able to sweep the 1,600-meter race walk in both the girls’ and boys’ meets. Alissa Irving was the girls’ winner in 9 minutes and 23.05 seconds, while Mitchell St. Peter took the boys’ title in 8:21.74.
Kate Finnemore, Taylor Hartley and Jessika Kovach all placed in the girls’ competition, as did Tyler Strid on the boys’ side.
Other Caribou winners were Sarah Doak in the 800 (2:44.08), Simone Michaud in the 400 (1:06.47) and the 4 X 400-meter relay team of Doak, Madeline Gudde, Michaud and Eileen Patton (4:45.27).
Coach Roy Alden said Michaud, a freshman, performed especially well in her first varsity meet. Doak posted Penobscot Valley Conference qualifying times in both the 800 and 1,600.
Alex Losieniecki took the boys’ 800 in 2:16.11 and Emilio Garcia won the 110 hurdles in 16.79 seconds to lead the Vikings. Alden said Garcia’s times in both hurdling races (the 110 and the 300) were impressive since it was the first time he had ever done those events.
Keith Draper took second in the javelin with a throw of 134 feet, 2 inches.
The Caribou girls scored 140 points, second only to Bangor’s 171 in the 10-team meet. The Viking boys were third with 140.5, behind Bangor (158) and Old Town (147.5). Eight teams participated in the event.
The Washburn girls’ two points came as a result of Tyra Shaw’s fifth-place finish in the long jump at 13 feet, 1 inch.
Presque Isle will host all Aroostook County schools in a meet set for Friday beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the Johnson Athletic Complex track at Presque Isle Middle School.
