115 Years Ago-May 11, 1898

• Robert McClellan has purchased the Johnson property on York Street and moved in last Friday.
• Some fine wagons have appeared on our streets this spring; one with pneumatic tires is owned by L. N. Berce and with hard rubber tires is owned by W. C. Spaulding.

100 Years Ago-May 7, 1914

• News from Van Buren — The Center Mill at Van Buren started sawing Tuesday, also the mills at Keegan opened. T. H. Findlen has his new drug store completed and open. The members of St. Bruno’s church had a most enjoyable whist party in their hall under the church; music was furnished by the college band.

75 Years Ago-May 11, 1939

• Ice damage at Madawaska Lake — Wind and ice at Madawaska Lake Wednesday evening damaged the camp of Reginald Roderick and endangered several others, particularly along the north and northeast shore. Wind caused the movement of the ice which tore the porch from the camp, knocking a pole through one of the windows. Andrew Lawson and August Sodergren, lifetime residents at the lake, reported they had never seen anything similar occurring on the lake before; and also reported the water as being the highest ever known.
• New grocery market for Caribou — Progress has been underway for the past week at the location formerly occupied by the A & P store on Sweden, in redecorating and restocking a new store, which is operated by Fred Allen and Lloyd McClish. The new store is conducting business under the name of Lloyd’s Market.

50 Years Ago-May 7, 1964

• Caribou statue proposed — The day may not be far off when Caribou will have a replica statue of its namesake in the town square as one of Aroostook County’s outstanding tourist attractions. A large caribou statue for the town was proposed to the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce this week by chairman of its tourist and convention committee, Roger Tuttle.
• Army Specialist Belanger receives second medal — Army Specialist Five Walter J. Belanger, son of Frank X. Belanger, Caribou, was awarded the Good Conduct Medal for the second time while serving with the Seventh U.S. Army Transportation Group in Germany. Belanger is a medical specialist.

25 Years Ago-May 10, 1989

• Candy stripers complete training — Seven young people successfully completed a training program for candy stripers held April 17-21 at Cary Medical Center in sessions conducted by Carol Soucie, R.N. They were Misty Theriault, Heather Raymond, Ryan Genz, Kelly Englund, Michael Saucier, Erica Gove and Amy Theriault.
• Helen P. Knight charity race — Plans are formalized for the ninth annual Helen P. Knight Road Race for runners, walkers and wheelchairs. The 5K-race will be held at the Downtown Mall in Caribou on Sunday, May 14 at 1 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Adult Multiple Alternatives Center and the Helen P. Knight School equally.
