WOODLAND, Maine — Both the driver and the homeowner escaped injury when a car veered into a Woodland home last week.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Darrell Crandall reported that shortly after 10 p.m. on May 8, the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call to respond to a vehicle crash on the New Sweden Road in Woodland. The caller, Sheldon Ketch, reported that a vehicle had struck his home and that the woman driving the car was unable to get out.
Sheriff’s deputies, the Caribou Fire Department and the Caribou Ambulance Service responded to the call and found a 2003 Dodge Intrepid almost completely inside Ketch’s home.
Neither the operator of the car, 20-year-old Makaila Bourgoine of New Sweden, nor Mr. Ketch was injured in the crash; Bourgoine was wearing her seatbelt.
According to Crandall, Bourgoine was traveling north on Route 161 in Woodland and swerved to avoid a moose in the roadway; she lost control of the vehicle, crossed into the southbound lane, left the roadway and struck the northeast corner of Ketch’s home. The car was more than halfway inside the home when first responders arrived.
Crandall stated that there was significant damage to the home and vehicle, but no charges are forthcoming.
