To the editor:
This past Mother’s Day here at the lake we woke to a nice quiet morning. As the wind picked up we began to see a green canoe come into view with paddles floating but no life jackets. My gut feeling was the worst.
We tried to enjoy coffee thinking somebody’s boat was not tied up and had broken loose during the night. Just then several game wardens took to the water from the Aroostook State Park boat landing. We immediately knew something was happening when a warden plane started a circling pattern over one spot. As the morning unfolded. I watched the courageous men in green doing what the day demanded of them — some sitting for hours in the cold breeze guarding a place the night before where a fun time turned to a very sad ending. These men never faltered from their duties.
From the start to the finish, my respect and pride for the Maine state warden service is of the highest regard. My hat is also off to the Sheriff’s Dept., PIPD, PIFD and all emergency-responders who played a part of the morning events. These men and women do this all the time. I personally want every one of them to know it was noticed and appreciated.
I am so sorry for the mom and dad on their loss. The young man, still a boy, did not get the chance to walk away. May God welcome you home, Jacob, and keep you safe from any earthly harm evermore.
