The Caribou Little League opened play May 10 and several games have been played since. Summaries of a few of those contests are as follows:
Shop & Save 5, S.W. Collins 0
Brothers Parker and Sawyer Deprey each pitched three shutout innings to lead Shop & Save to a 5-0 victory over S.W. Collins on Opening Day of the 2014 Caribou Little League season.
Parker Deprey allowed only one hit and his younger brother only three, while they combined to strike out 12 batters. At the plate, Sawyer Deprey and Ethan Holdsworth each had three hits, while Miles Collier added a single and a double and Alex Ezzy chipped in with an RBI single.
For S.W. Collins, Caleb Espling had two doubles and Zach Gerakaris had a single and double. On the mound, Sydney Thompson pitched four strong innings, striking out nine without issuing a walk. Dagan Savage pitched the final two frames.
Sleepers 21, Knights of Columbus 10
Sleepers opened with a win over the Knights of Columbus in a hard-fought game that was much in doubt until the fifth inning. The Knights took leads of 5-0 and 10-5, but the Sleepers team showed some veteran toughness in coming back twice before putting the game away late. Bryce Bonville led the Knights with a single and triple while brother Colby Bonville singled and scored twice. Marcus Daigle had two hits. Corey Herbert and Hailey Holmquist each doubled while Ryan Austin added a single for the Knights.
For Sleepers, Devin White and Hayden Hunter each had two hits, Chris Cassidy had a double, Jay Belanger and Brandon Jalbert each singled, while first-year player Ezra Judd collected his first hit and scored three runs in his Little League debut. Hunter collected the win on the mound, coming on in the second inning and completing the game with nine strikeouts and no walks in five innings of work.
Eagles 18, Police 12
The Woodland Eagles defeated the Police, with Scott Bray and Amber Moir doing the pitching and Moir pacing the offense with three hits, including a home run. Hollie McDougal also had three hits, while Brooke Blackstone and Monica McLaughlin each had a single. The Police’s starting pitcher was Devin Saggese, with relief provided by Cameron Ouellette and Alya Theriault. The offense for the Police was led by Drew Evans with two singles and Logan Longley with a single.
Shop & Save 10, Sleepers 1
Another strong pitching performance by Shop & Save led to a 10-1 victory over Sleepers. Parker Deprey started and went four innings, giving up only one run on one hit to get the victory. Ezzy earned the two-inning save by allowing only one hit during his stint.
At the plate, Sawyer Deprey had a two-run, inside-the-park home run and an RBI single to lead the attack. Ezzy had a double and a single and Parker Deprey and Miles Collier notched two singles. For Sleepers, Belanger and Hunter each had doubles, with White scoring the team’s only run. On the mound, Belanger pitched four innings with 10 strikeouts and Hunter pitching the final two frames.
Eagles 8, MVH/VFW 6
The Woodland Eagles pulled out a close win over Maine Veterans’ Home/VFW. For the Eagles, Ghent Durepo struck out 11 and smashed an inside-the-park home run. Bray had a double and two triples, scoring three times, and Connor Soucy walked and stole his way around the bases before scoring on a passed ball.
For the MVH/VFW team, Josh Cummings pitched a great game and scored a run. Jacob Berkowski came on in relief and scored two runs. Brannon Hall also scored twice and Logan Griffeth added the final run.
Other scores were: Key Bank 23, Tigers 3; Northstars 12, MVH/VFW 8; S.W. Collins 6, Machias Bank 4; Key Bank 13, Knights of Columbus 5; Northstars 24, Tigers 0; and Machias Bank 10, Police 2.
