Many Houlton women and even more Maine women love to make quilts, some ultra complicated and beautiful and others more simple, warm, washable and usable. Each has a place in our lives.
One of the most helpful books we have found, “Quilt-opedia, the only quilting reference you’ll ever need” by Laura Jane Taylor 746.46 Tay), is just a sweet gem.  Pictures of procedures are clear as a day in June and easy to follow. One eye-catching pattern is the Rainbow Road Quilt in the Simple Section. Neat stuff.

In the Intermediate section our favorite is the Obsession Quilt which would be stunning in deep value fabrics or just dreamy with pastel values. A laptop case is in the Advanced Project section for the techies needing an individual statement to protect their case.
Also bonus pages detail smaller projects: table runners, a travel sewing kit (might be good for a college student to have for mending times) and a patchwork Christmas stocking.
Along with the book above, we fell in love with the tiny “pretty little potholders” edited by Valerie Van Arsdale Shrader (746 Shr). Such little gems this book offers, little projects to use scraps  from bigger projects so not much goes to waste. One pattern uses old sweaters. Round holders, square ones, some with pockets, a schoolhouse shape, and a favorite yo-yo decorated which would be a shame to scorch, as we usually eventually do.
These and many books on crafts are available at the Cary Library for your enjoyment.
