ASHLAND, Maine — Work could begin as early as this summer on improvements to a truck route between Route 11 and the Clark Siding Road to allow heavier vehicles convenient, direct access to the mills in that area.
“Road construction for overweight trucks may happen this summer. The state will restrict speed on the bridge, due to the added weight,” said Town Manager Ralph Dwyer.
In addition to bridge improvements and asphalt work, Dwyer said officials will be addressing improvements to water and sewer lines in the area.
“The Water and Sewer District has to replace water mains on the Garfield Road. That’s the oldest lines in town — at least 60 years old. WSD worked with the town and NMDC to secure a $640,000 CDBG grant for work on that,” Dwyer said.
Funds will be used toward fixing the water main and adding erosion protection at the water plant.
“The state has been very good to us this year. Grants are obtained through the municipality for projects like these,” said the town manager.
The work is expected to be completed this year.
“It has to be done prior to the road work for overweight trucks. The piping is too old and brittle to withstand heavy trucks right now. Once this project is completed, then we can focus on road work,” said Dwyer.
