PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Utilities District will began work on a water main on Main Street this week to replace more than 1,000 feet of the water line in what’s being called the first phase of a project that will eventually result in the line crossing the Aroostook River.
“A project to replace the water main on North Main Street is scheduled to begin this month. Construction work was expected to start May 19. About 1,100 feet of new water main will be installed, beginning near the Aroostook River Bridge and ending just south of the Maysville Street intersection,” said Steve Freeman, district director.
The contractor for the project is Trombley Construction of Presque Isle and the consulting engineer is Woodard & Curran of Bangor.
The change is being made to install larger piping.
“The water main is being replaced because the existing main is too small. This work is the first phase of a future project to construct a water main across the Aroostook River. The project is being done this year because the Maine Department of Transportation plans to pave Main Street in 2015. After the paving is done, there is a five-year moratorium on doing non-emergency underground utility work in the street,” said Freeman.
Freeman said the total cost of the project is about $375,000.
“The project will be financed with a low-interest loan from the Drinking Water State Revolving Loan Fund Program,” he said.
The project is expected to be completed by July.
“Most of the construction work will be completed at night between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. People shopping and working in Presque Isle should expect traffic disruptions when traveling at night on North Main Street in the vicinity of the Maysville Street intersection,” said Freeman.
