Susan Jane Brown passed away on Thursday, May 22, at the Yale-New Haven Hospital. Susan was born in Presque Isle to parents Philip H. Brown Sr. and Ruth Cogswell Brown. We are honoring Susan’s specific request to not note her birthday, a tradition she has followed since she entered her professional career.
It didn’t take long for Susan to learn her first words and she quickly developed a “gift for gab” and in-depth conversation. In fact, it wasn’t until she and her twin brother, born on January 11, 1946, were placed in separate classrooms upon entering the sixth grade that the Caribou (Maine) teachers discovered that Stephen could actually speak.
Susan graduated from Caribou High School in 1964 and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Maine in Presque Isle and a Master’s in Education from Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. She was an avid reader and imparted an appreciation for the English language and reading to all of her students at the public school system in Mount Vernon, New York, during her 30-year teaching career. Upon retiring from teaching, Susan served as a graduate advisor at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York from 2006-2012.
Susan was a devoted parishioner of Stanwich Congregational Church in Greenwich, Connecticut, where she facilitated two Bible study groups. She was also very active in the New Canaan Women’s Group. She never forgot her roots and dedicatedly returned to her hometown of Caribou whenever possible. Susan loved to shop and never found a shopping bag she couldn’t fill. She also had impeccable taste and style in the home décor arena, with the styling of rooms in her home reminiscent of rooms featured in many housekeeping magazines.
Susan was extremely proud of her children. Her son Christian, who works in sales, just recently accepted a transfer to a new position in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He and his wife, Jennifer, have two children, 10-year old Katelyn and 8-year old Noah. Her daughter Lindsay works as an administrative assistant. She, her husband Thomas O’Neil, and daughter Sophia (age 6) reside in Stratford, Connecticut. Susan is also survived by her older brother, Philip H. Brown Jr. of Downingtown, Pennsylvania; her twin brother, Stephen of San Antonio, Texas; her younger sister, Diane McDonough and husband, Philip, of Caribou; and their families which include 10 nephews and nieces, 14 first cousins, and countless other relatives and close friends.
A memorial service is scheduled at the Stanwich Congregational Church at 11 a.m. on June 14. A committal service will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Caribou, Maine at 2 p.m. on June 21.
