The Caribou Vikings’ varsity tennis teams have two matches remaining and both appear in good position to secure playoff berths.
The Caribou girls won two of their three matches played last week to move up to 11th place in the Eastern Maine Class B standings. The team sandwiched a loss to Presque Isle with victories over Houlton and Old Town and is now 5-5. Caribou played the Wildcats again Tuesday and wrap up the regular season with a make-up match against Madawaska this afternoon.
The boys’ tennis team from CHS is on track to host a preliminary playoff match. Currently in seventh place at 7-3, the Vikings are coming off a perfect week by besting Houlton, Presque Isle and Old Town. Caribou also has the back-to-back matches against PI and Madawaska.
The prelim round of the playoffs is scheduled for Tuesday, June 3.
The girls’ week was highlighted by Saturday’s home win over the Coyotes of Old Town. The final score was 4-1, with Erin Patton, Makayla Bouchard and Clara Collins all coming out on top in their singles matches. Collins had the closest match, but defeated Joci St. Jean, 8-6.
In doubles, the Vikings’ Bria Judd and Conner Spencer eased to an 8-1 win, while Caribou’s No. 2 tandem of Taylor Belanger and Brittany Dickinson fell short in their match.
The Vikes also beat Houlton on the road last Wednesday, 4-1, while falling at home to Presque Isle the following afternoon by the same 4-1 score.
The Caribou boys swept their matches, beating Houlton, 3-2, last Wednesday, before stopping PI Thursday, 4-1, and shutting out Old Town Saturday, 5-0.
In the most recent victory, Brendan Cyr, Michael Marquis and Ethan Plourde combined to lose just one game as they swept their singles matches over the winless Coyotes.
The Vikings’ first doubles team of Austin Scott and Austin Cheplic was taken to a tie-breaker, but still defeated Old Town’s Griffin Marquis and Nick Ferro, 9-8 (7-4). Dustin Coty and Dylan Coty, Caribou’s other doubles team, also came away with the triumph.
