McAfee named Region Two Career and Technical Education Student of the Year

Emily McAfee has been named Region Two’s CTE (Career and Technical Education) “Student of the Year” and participated in a dinner ceremony in Lewiston sponsored by MACTE (Maine Association of Career and Technical Education), an association of the state’s twenty-seven CTE Directors.
Region Two Early Childhood Education Instructor, Alison Reece, wrote of her nominee, “Emily has been a student in the Early Childhood Education Program at Region Two School of Applied Technology for two years, earning consistently high ranks and demonstrating a deep commitment to working with young children and their families. Through this program, she has completed field placements in a variety of early childhood settings including: Head Start, center-based childcare and public pre-k, as well as working in a special needs program for children with Autism.  These experiences have demonstrated that Emily is capable of working effectively with a wide range of children and adults.
“Emily has further demonstrated her commitment to the field of Early Childhood Education by enrolling in the Early Childhood Education program at Northern Maine Community College where she will utilize the dual enrollment credits she has earned during her time at Region Two,” Reece continued. “She has also earned college credits through the Early College for ME program by completing night courses at the Houlton Higher Education Center.  Emily has competed in the SkillsUSA Maine State Competition in Early Childhood Education and will earn her CECA (Certified Early Childhood Assistant) Certification upon graduation.”
Reece was Region Two’s CTE “Student of the Year” for 2005 in their Early Childhood Education program and is in her second year as that program’s instructor.
MACTE Executive Director, Don Cannon, presided over the ceremonies. Congressman Mike Michaud brought three of the state’s CTE “Student of the Year” candidates from the twenty-seven schools, drawn at random, to the stage to each receive a MACTE $1000.00 scholarship; the third scholarship was donated by Congressman Michaud.
