100 Years Ago-June 10, 1914

Of local interest — Hiram Garrison and Emmett Mulherrin (Monticello) have bought one of the old schoolhouses and moved it on a lot south of the new school house, and will convert it into a dwelling. Most of the farmers in Linneus have finished their planting and are working on the roads for road commissioners Stewart and Tyrell. A company of strolling musicians were in town (Houlton) Monday, and rendered some pleasing open air concerts.

Soda fountain is big draw — From an advertisement placed by Broadway Pharmacy, Fred O. Hanagan, proprietor: “Our soda fountain has become the Mecca for the thirsty. It is not to be wondered at, because we serve only the finest fruits, syrups and our soda water is the coldest and best we can draw.”

Full Military Funeral honors Colonel Hume — Houlton assumed a respectful silence this afternoon, with flags flown at half mast and places of business closed, as local citizens joined with the military and civic organizations in paying final tribute to Colonel Frank M. Hume, 72, wartime commander of the 103rd Infantry, who died suddenly at his home on Military street early Tuesday morning.
Father’s Day specials — Featured items at the Taggett & Gartley store this week are: all-wool suits, $15; all-wool swim trunks, 98 cents; straw and felt men’s hats, 50 – 95 cents; and work shoes, assorted colors, 49 cents.

Putnam honored at Ricker — At Ricker Classical Institute’s Annual Awards Assembly Friday at Putnam gymnasium, Murray Putnam, son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Putnam of North Amity, was presented with a certificate for being a high scorer among 750,000 high school students who took Time Magazine’s current affairs test.
White serving aboard USS Enterprise — Timothy J. White, seaman apprentice, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman White of Benedicta, is serving aboard the nuclear powered attack aircraft carrier USS Enterprise operating with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean.

Environmental groups hosts DEP’s Hoppe — Members of the southern chapter of the Aroostook County Environmental Society (ACES), welcomed Kathy Hoppe to their meeting. Hoppe is the Department of Environmental Protection’s county water quality official based at Presque Isle. She explained the effects of human pressure on the quality of the county’s lakes and streams, and the role of the DEP in monitoring the impact.
Museum open for 51st season — The Aroostook Historical and Art Museum of Houlton is open for its 51st season. Founded in 1938 by Ransford W. Shaw, the museum has attracted visitors and been a local resource center for area schools. An open house will be held during the 4th of July and Potato Feast Days.
