A summer lunch program for Houlton-area children up to age 18 will be held in the dining room of the Houlton United Methodist Church from 11:30 a.m. until noon. It will begin Monday, June 23, and end Thursday, July 31, Monday through Thursday of each week (no Thursday lunch on July 3). This program, funded by the state and federal governments, is designed to feed children who rely on the school lunch program during the school year.
“We are anxious to participate in this program and pray that it will help address the growing hunger problem in our area,” said Gerald (Moose) Karnes. “Although we are a relatively small church, our members believe that, as part of God’s family, it is our opportunity to help serve where there is a need. God has richly blessed us, and we are pleased to sponsor the Backpacks for Kids Program, which helps to provide nutritious food to families of school children on weekends when the school cafeterias are closed. It is also our pleasure to provide food boxes to area families during the Christmas season. The kindness and generosity of HUMC members, County Yankee, Andy’s I.G.A., the Houlton Rotary Club, and countless individuals within our community have played a major role in our being able to participate in these programs.”
Parents of children up to age 18 wishing to have their children participate in the summer lunch program are encouraged to contact the church office at 532-3332 from 9 a.m. until noon to ensure there will be enough meals available for the next day.
The Houlton United Methodist Church is located at the corner of Military Street and School Street.
