MONTICELLO, Maine — The community filled the Wellington gymnasium for the final performance of the Stage Adventures theatre company on May 16. This year’s presentation entitled, “Princess and the Pea”, a musical comedy written by Don Kukla, featured 57 of the 66 students enrolled in the country school. For the first time several pre-K students participated, since it was the final show due to the closing in June of Wellington School.
The co-directors of the theatre group from Sullivan, N.H. are Rob and Lorrie Gray, a husband-wife team. They started the company in 1999. This was the fourteenth season to work with the Monticello students. Dale Holden served as the accompanist for the musical adaptation of the play and Neil Gibbs, elementary vocal instructor assisted with the sound system. Brian McMann videotaped the performance.
The students performed a matinee in the afternoon for the first-grade students from Houlton Elementary School. Many of the spectators for the evening were students who had participated in previous plays and are now attending schools in Houlton or have graduated.
Wellington’s PTC group and the school staff sponsored the event using money raised through several fundraisers. Following the performance the cast members and their guests enjoyed cakes designed with the theme of the play by Tina Pierce of Monticello.
