Caribou’s tennis preliminary playoff matches Monday featured a pair of upsets, as the Viking boys were beaten at home by Waterville and the girls surprised Erskine Academy of South China on the road.
The Caribou girls, the No. 11 seed, will now take on No. 3 Camden Hills in another away match Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals.

The Viking girls pulled off a 4-1 victory over the sixth-ranked Erskine squad. The Vikes won all of their contested matches — Erin Patton, Makayla Bouchard and Clara Collins in singles, with Bria Judd and Conner Spencer combining for the victory in first doubles. Caribou was forced to forfeit its No. 2 doubles match as the team didn’t have enough players to compete, but that was the only loss of the day.
Caribou shut out Madawaska last Wednesday, 5-0, after falling to Presque Isle the previous afternoon, 4-1, to close out regular season action. The Vikings completed the regular season with a 6-6 record.
The No. 7 Caribou boys lost to the 10th-ranked Panthers, 3-2. The Vikings received their victories from Michael Marquis, a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Adrian Rivas in the No. 2 singles match, and the first doubles team of Austin Scott and Austin Cheplic, who topped Jon Oliver and Bridger Holly, 6-1, 6-2.
Brendan Cyr of Caribou lost his No. 1 singles match to Zack Disch, 6-2, 6-1, while Ethan Plourde in third singles was beaten by John  Kaminski, 7-6 (9-7), 6-1.
In No. 2 doubles, Dustin and Dylan Coty fell to Will Sennett and Galen Lichterfeld, 6-1, 6-4.
The Vikings finished their regular season with an 8-4 mark after beating Presque Isle last Tuesday, 4-1, and stopping Madawaska the following afternoon, 3-2.
Three Caribou players competed in the state singles tournament, which was held Friday and Saturday at Colby College in Waterville.
On the boys’ side, Cyr lost to Bryce Tetrault of North Yarmouth Academy, 6-2, 6-1, in the Round of 48, while Marquis was beaten by Deering’s Tyler Butler, 6-1, 6-2.
For the girls, Patton was a 6-1, 6-2 loser to Mt. Ararat’s Christine Levesque in the Round of 48.
