LIMESTONE, Maine — The Limestone selectpeople met on June 4 to discuss the proposition of changing the name of the Limestone Fire Department.
At the last selectpeople’s meeting on May 21, the board began discussing potential plans for some type of memorial to be placed at the Limestone Fire Department, in honor of the late Dr. Albert H. Damon. Initially, the plan was to place a memorial stone on the front lawn of the LFD, however, prior to the June 4 meeting, the selectpeople held a public meeting to discuss the option to rename the Fire Dept. to honor Dr. Damon.
Rather than placing a plaque or memorial stone at the LFD, the entire building and all the volunteer firefighters who work there will stand as a timeless commemorative to Dr. Damon. The volunteer firefighters at the Limestone Fire Department have not yet decided exactly what the building will be named, but the Damon family name will inevitably adorn the building.
At a selectpeople’s meeting on May 21, Limestone Fire Department Chief Jon Poitras expressed the department’s desire to, in some way, honor the late Dr. Damon, who ultimately established the very first volunteer fire department in Limestone.
The board, along with helpful input from the town, voted unanimously to change the name to honor Dr. Damon, but the ultimate decision has yet to be made. The final decision on a name will eventually be decided upon by the volunteers at the Limestone Fire Department. Further information on the name-change will be reported once the decision is final.
