To the editor:
My daughter and I are traveling internationally this summer so she needed a passport. The government website was overwhelming so I called the Houlton Post Office and talked to an extremely friendly man named Henry. He not only patiently answered all my questions but went to the website himself and led me through the paperwork I would need. He set up our appointment and went above and beyond to help us in any way he could.
I had to reschedule our appointment so when I called the next time, another jovial man named Jason answered. He, too, was absolutely pleasant and gracious as he relentlessly worked around my schedule to get our passport done as soon as possible to meet an upcoming deadline.
The only time we could get to the Houlton Post Office was at 7 a.m. and a considerate employee at the HPO named Denise agreed to meet us there bright and early. When we were finally ready to apply, I didn’t have the certified birth certificate, only a copy! Denise was very gracious and said she would wait as I ran home to frantically look for it and then run to the Houlton Town Office for a new copy.
As you can imagine, I was a bit stressed at this point, but was met at the Houlton Town Office by more kind, smiling faces, Mrs. Bither and Mrs. Asselin, who had my daughter’s birth certificate ready before I even had the check written out.
We had our passport application sent in an hour’s time thanks to these most effectual, considerate employees and neighbors.
It may seem like a rambling story to you, but I just wanted to take a moment to thank each of them and to remind myself how blessed I am to have raised our children in such an amazing environment as Houlton, Maine. You truly don’t find gracious, kind, and above and beyond helpful folks like this everywhere.
