Special Olympics Spring Games a hit

More than 270 athletes, representing more than 31 schools and organizations, converged at the Gehrig Johnson Athletic Complex adjacent to Presque Isle Middle School May 16 for the annual Aroostook County Special Olympics Spring Games.
Several volunteers, including National Honor Society chapters from several County high schools, were also on hand to assist and cheer on the athletes.
Unlike past years, the weather cooperated with warm temperatures and not a drop of rain falling throughout the event.
The opening ceremonies included a parade, which was marshaled by the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus of Fort Fairfield and the Community Living Association of Houlton.
Annabel Schleife, a student at Community High School in Fort Kent, joined state trooper Andrew Levesque in carrying in and lighting the Special Olympics torch.
Athletes participated in wheelchair and running races, the softball throw and the standing long jump.
Law enforcement officers from the area helped with the presentation of medals.
