MARS HILL NEWS
by Tomi Henderson
The new Mars Hill and Blaine Sargent/Tweedie Bandstand in Mars Hill was officially opened on Saturday, June 14, at 4 p.m. Thanks to the generosity of two leading businessmen, Bruce Sargent and Michael Tweedie, funds were provided to purchase and construct the bandstand on the Hiram Adelman Memorial Park.
Thanks to the efforts of committee members Eldon Lawrence and Steve Stiles, the bandstand model was selected and built. Thanks go to all who made the bandstand possible, from construction help and electrical work, to donations for materials.
It was decided to upgrade the park. Funds were provided by using part of a donation from the family of Dr. Ora E. Gilpatrick, a dentist serving the area for many years. Salmon River Nursery and Mark Pendergrass donated the trees and shrubs for the park restoration.
A new flagpole and flag are also part of the new park, donated and installed by the Dalton Scovil Family in memory of Betty Scovil.
Many thanks go to all the people and businesses as well as to the other committee members: Dana Crory, John Kilcollins, Milton Adelman, Pam Townsend, Linda Stiles and Gail Lawrence.
Special thanks go to The Aroostook Brass Band for playing several numbers for the enjoyment of those attending. The Brass Band members include: Adam Metzler, Suzanne Beaudet of Presque Isle, Jenna and Jon Simonoff of Caribou and Nason Donahue of New Sweden. Also thanks go to Fireman Fred Parsons for being the emcee for the event and singing several numbers himself.
Band performances and varied concerts will be presented throughout the summer. All performances are free of charge. To see about scheduling events at the bandstand, contact coordinator Dana Crory at 425-7991.

Rotary news
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, June 10, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speakers were Stephanie Caverhill and Greg Rawlings. They spoke about being part of the team working with the U.S. Olympians in Sochi, Russia. Stephanie was the massage therapist who worked with the U.S. Ski Team. She showed slides and spoke about her experiences.
There were three villages used for the Olympics: the coastal, endurance and mountain. She stayed at a chalet with the U.S. girls’ team and did around 135 massages over a three-week period.
Stephanie was able to attend the opening ceremony and was awed by the displays of ballet, opera and more. The closing ceremonies were also a fun time, with parties and athletes from the different countries trading clothes with each other. Stephanie has been with the U.S. Nordic Team for four years and has been able to travel to different places with the group.
Greg was a trainer and guide with the U.S. Paralympics Team that competed following the Winter Olympics. Among the events were sledge hockey, cross country, alpine skiing and curling. Greg acted as a guide for a legally-blind skier, skiing in front of him through the course.
