The Katahdin High School boys finished their spring seasons last Tuesday in the Eastern Maine playoffs.
The No. 12 Cougars were defeated, 16-0, by No. 5 Limestone/MSSM, as the Eagles capitalized on miscues in the field.
“We had nine errors overall, which was really our downfall,” said Katahdin baseball coach James Zabierek.
Trailing 4-0, the Cougars committed six errors in the second inning, which attributed to an Eagle 10-run inning. The Eagles capped off their scoring with two runs in the fourth inning to end the game in the fifth. Katahdin was outhit 14-3.
“Those errors helped them get way out in front to secure the win,” Zabierek added.
“Chris Bernier pitched the first three innings for Limestone/MSSM and he is a really exceptional talent,” said Zabierek. “He has great command of the strike zone.”
Katahdin loaded the bases in the top of the fifth, but to no avail.
“It looked like we could have gained some momentum and helped keep the game alive, but it was too little, too late,” added Zabierek.
Bernier and Tyler Morgan combined for five innings of three-hit, shutout ball.
The Cougars end their season with a 3-12 record.
