The Washburn Beavers completed one of the most successful baseball seasons in school history Saturday.
The squad closed out the campaign with a 13-3 overall mark following a 10-0 loss to Bangor Christian in the Eastern Maine Class D semifinal round.
Washburn drew a bye into the quarterfinals by virtue of its No. 3 ranking. The team stopped Penobscot Valley of Howland Thursday, 14-6, before being shut out by the Patriots two days later.
In the win, Washburn moved out to a 7-1 lead into the fifth inning before the Howlers rallied for five runs to close the game to a single run.
In the top of the sixth, PVHS had two baserunners with nobody out before Beaver reliever Noah Caron came in to retire three straight and end the rally.
In the bottom of the inning, Keagan Page, who was Washburn’s starting pitcher, ripped a two-run single to highlight a seven-run rally. Chandler Dobson, Cameron Bragg and Carter Doak all had RBI singles later in the frame and Caron threw a 1-2-3 seventh to end it.
Parker Thompson had three hits and three RBI to lead the winning offense.
In the loss to BC in the semifinal round, Justin Davis managed Washburn’s lone hit as the Beavers were beaten in a game which ended after six innings due to the run rule.
The Patriots scored in all but one inning and earned the right to play Limestone-MSSM in today’s title game.
“This year, we exceeded a lot of people’s expectations,” said Washburn coach Ben Goodwin. “I always try to focus on getting my athletes to know their potential and to try to reach it with hard work and dedication, and this year I can say with confidence they did just that.”
In Thursday’s quarterfinal round, Fort Fairfield fell to Limestone-MSSM, 7-4, to end its season with a 10-6 record. Dalton Cassidy’s three hits led the Tigers.
