LIMESTONE — Three Limestone Community School seniors are the recipients of prestigious awards handed out at the school’s June 5 athletic awards ceremony.
Melissa Cantafio and Chris Bernier received the Pet Thornton/Howard Lello Award as the female and male athlete of the year at Limestone Community School.
“The outstanding athlete is selected by the coaching staff at Limestone Community School,” according to athletic director Travis Barnes. “Coaches take into consideration athletic ability, sportsmanship, character, citizenship and scholarship when determining a candidate for the award. We also look at what other awards students have earned while they have participated in their sports at LCS.”
The other major award handed out was the J. Roger Bernard Administrators Award.
“This award is given to an athlete who represents the school and community as they compete,” Barnes said. “The recipient is a team leader, an ambassador for Limestone Community School and someone who strives to make the programs at LCS better.”
This year’s winner is Kelsee Albert.
Members of the LCS/MSSM baseball, softball and track and field teams were also recognized for their participation during the awards ceremony.
In baseball, Bernier was chosen most valuable player, while Gordon McCulloh was named most improved player and Paul Gentile was presented the coach’s award.
The softball MVP was Cantafio, with Ellyzabeth Bencivenga named most improved and Albert the coach’s award recipient.
Grier Osterman was the boys’ track and field MVP and Leah Kihn took the girls’ honor. Jason Webb and Lillian Costello were most improved and Thomas Hamilton and Haley Teranko coach’s award winners.
