Monticello news — A number of Monticello citizens are planning to attend the Orangemen’s field day at Caribou. Fred hare has completely renovated the G. W. Noddin store in Monticello and is putting in a new stock of general goods, now open to the public for business.
A gift to France — The Museum of Natural History of Grenoble, France, through Madame Alexander-Marius of Boston, wishes to publicly express grateful appreciation for a superb pair of moose horns given by Mr. James C. Madigan of Houlton.

July Fourth draws 12,000 to Houlton — More than 12,000 resident of Aroostook County, other sections of Maine, and many from New Brunswick enjoyed a safe and sane, highly enjoyable day in Houlton on July Fourth at the annual Independence Day Celebration sponsored this year by the Houlton Lodge of Elks.
Chadwick feted for fishing skills — The first Houlton angler to receive a certificate of membership in the “Big-One-That-Didn’t-Get-Away-Club” is Harold Chadwick who earned it double, getting a togue in Grand Lake that weighed 20 pounds and two days later hauling in one that weighed 21.

Guard sends four to S.C. — Capt. George A. Roach, commanding officer of Battery B, 1st Howitzer Battalion, 152nd Artillery, Maine Army National Guard, has announced that four guardsmen from the Houlton Battery have left for basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. They are Private Wilbert J. Bossie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Bossie; Private Dale E. Roach, son of Mr. and Mrs. George E. Roach; Private William H. Barriner Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. William Barriner, all of Houlton, and Private Willard E. Brannen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon A. Brannen of Oakfield.

Nineteen vie for Benedicta Queen — Nineteen girls will compete for the title of Miss Liberty during the annual Fourth of July celebration here in Benedicta. Contestants are: Lois and Louise Leavitt, Patty Cannon, Cheryl Stubbs and Lana Duffy of Sherman Station; Bonnie Robinson, Becky Williams, Bonita Welch and Carol Cox of Sherman Mills; June Huckby, Beth Ordway, Donna Porter, Valerie Glidden and Michaeline Detour of Patten; Candace Newman, Sue Tingley, Betty Murray, Brenda Webb and Diana Porter of Island Falls.

K of C holds grand opening — The new Knights of Columbus facility on Woodstock Road’s grand opening and ribbon cutting took place last week in the impressive 100-foot by 45-foot hall with capacity to seat up to 350 people.
Post 47 color guard is state’s best — The Color Guard from Houlton Post 47 placed first in competition for the position of American Legion State Color Guard; members are Paul Hoyt, Ray Eastham, Earl Holck, Robert Hardy and Bill Hardy.
