CARIBOU — Two brand new benches were donated to the Veterans’ Memorial Park Association on July 11; the surprisingly comfortable concrete benches are the newest addition to the South Main Street park that volunteers created last spring, and there’s more to come.
Phil McDonough II of the Veterans’ Memorial Park Association said that the two new benches came from a generous donation through the Cole Land Transportation Museum in Bangor; McDonough credited Director of Operations Jim Neville at the museum for showing support of the small park dedicated to honoring veterans.
Volunteers began preparing a spot for the benches last fall, and Dave McEntee, delivery specialist for Aroosta Cast in Presque Isle, delivered the seating last Friday. The benches were made by the concrete fabricators at Aroosta Cast, which is owned by brothers Tim and Kelly Wilcox of Easton and Mapleton, respectively.
Having helped with the placement of the heavy cement benches, Joel Theriault of the park association said that he was “100 percent pleased” with the new additions to the Caribou landmark.
“We’re trying to create this [park] to draw the young people here, so they won’t forget the veterans,” he explained.
Next on the list of park projects are two monument pieces that will add further historic and educational significance to the small public gathering spot.
“This is a living project, so there’s no end to what we can do until we run out of space — but we don’t want it to be cluttered, either,” McDonough said.
On behalf of the Veterans’ Memorial Park Association, McDonough thanked the Cole Land Transportation Museum for the donation and the community, for the support they’ve provided.
