Automobile fever hits Littleton — Automobile fever had not struck Littleton until within a few weeks ago when two of our well known citizens recently bought, and it looks now as if two or three more would be captured by the disease. Rev. H. H.

Gosman has bought Wilmot Gentle’s Overland Roadster. Edward Titcomb is initiating his new auto recently purchased through F. F. Harrison, agent for the Overland.
Record year for potatoes by rail — During the year ending June 30, 1914, the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad moved 6,000 carloads in excess of the heaviest previous potato shipping season in the company’s history.

Brisk visitor business reported — The Information Bureau in Market Square did a brisk business during the past week when 104 visitors signed the register. In general, the majority come from New England and Middle Atlantic states and are headed for the Provinces and the Gaspe trip.
Pea pilfering — In his “Thoughts and Afterthoughts” column, the editor reports: There are reports of a considerable amount of pilfering going on in Snider plots both by children and adults. Housewives are complaining at being called to the front door too frequently to be sold peas. Theory is they are being swiped from canning plots. Guards have been stationed in several fields and those caught may rue their act.

In the military — UofM ROTC cadet Terrence J. Hannan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard J. Hannan of Houlton, is currently undergoing summer encampment at Fort Devens, Mass. Two Houlton youths have enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps; William L. Gormley and Wayne G. Pelletier. Army PFC Larry D. Thibodeau, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claude E. Thibodeau of Houlton, participated in a review ceremony during the visit of Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy to 3rd Armored Division units in Friedburg Germany.
Twirlers hit of Benedicta parade — The newly formed Pattenettes were a hit of the Benedicta Fourth of July parade. Colorfully attired in black and silver costumes and twirling their batons, they received favorable comment. Troupe members, all from Patten, are: Margo Arbo, Lynda Brown, Kathryn Lord, Sherry Huckaby, Claudia Bates, Twila Johnson, Maureen Birmingham, Louise Lane, Janie Olson, Ruth Porter, Ruth Lyons, Helen Glidden, Melissa McCafferty, directed by Mrs. Helen Garton and led by Miss Heidi Garton.

Community loses leader in Madigan — Dr. John Madigan, 72, of Houlton, died July 9 at a local hospital. A leader in area medical and civic circles, he was a teacher in the local nurses’ training school, a member and past president of the local hospital staff and a Town Council member for six years. He was a past president of: Aroostook County TBC Association, Aroostook County Medical Society, Maine Chapter of American Academy of Family Physicians, and was awarded the Outstanding Citizen for Houlton in 1974.

Wrestler Hernandez gains national honors — Chico Hernandez or Westerly, R.I., and husband of Becky Williams of Hodgdon, took second place at the 1989 National Amateur Athletic Union United States of America Freestyle Wrestling Championships held at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Mich.
