PATTEN – Madelyn Townsend, 83, passed away July 18 in Bangor with her family by her side. She was born October 19, 1930, in Houlton, the daughter of Wilbur and Geneva (Hatt) Glidden.
Madelyn graduated from Patten Academy and attended Husson College. In 1949, she was the Patten representative of the Potato Blossom Festival. She attended Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church for many years. As the mother of 5, she was the ultimate house wife, keeping her home a welcoming place for all the children of the neighborhood. She was an integral part in her husband’s career as a farmer. She did everything from running for parts, driving tractors and providing coffee and goodies during break time.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Thurston Townsend of Patten; five children, Mark Townsend of North Woburn, MA, Janice Hanscom and her husband, Dick of Fairbanks, AK, Ruth Basile and her husband, Mike of Levittown, NY, Joan Thomas and her husband, Tom of Strafford, NH, Jeanne Morse and her husband, Craig of Shin Pond, and daughter-in-law Diane; grandchildren, Adam Townsend, Caleb Townsend and his wife, Kerri, Rochelle Hanscom, Josh Morse and his wife, Jacquie, Jay Morse and his wife, Leanne, Cody Morse and his fiancée, Caitlin, Wyatt Morse, Jonathan Basile, Michael Basile Jr., Daniel Thomas and Robert Thomas; great-grandchildren, Dominic Morse, Nicole Morse, Emily Townsend, Jace Morse, Mya Townsend, Angel Thomas, Cassie Thomas; sisters, Emmeline Walton and Elaine Witherell and husband, Herv, of Monmouth; brothers, Wilbur Glidden Jr. of Clearwater FL and Emery Glidden of Augusta; sister-in-law, Pamelia Mooers of Caribou; nieces and nephews and many close friends that are too numerous to list. She was predeceased by her parents and two grandsons, Kenton Hanscom of Fairbanks, AK and Tanner Morse of Stacyville.
There was a celebration of Madelyn’s life on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church in Patten with a social gathering following.
