Farmers’ Market: Prescription

Take the time to read the entirety of a prescription drug bottle and you will learn a lot. In addition to where you bought it and who prescribed it, which presumably you already knew, you can learn the actual drug name and how much of it is contained in each unit.
You are reminded how many and how often, in case you missed that part when you were sitting in the examination room with your doctor. You learn how many treatments you have in store and under what circumstances it should be administered. Do you need a full stomach or an empty one? Will it make you photosensitive or less likely to survive a long road trip? Should you park the bulldozer? Is that late night party with some wild and crazy guys likely to be postponed? If the stuff is working, can you come back for more?
Now imagine for a minute that our food came in neat little containers like that. Instead of counting pills, you count servings of fruits and vegetables. Forget the child-resistant caps; dose yourself to your heart’s content. Amazing flavors will unquestionably make your tongue appreciative of the “cure.” Regularly taking your “medicine” is likely to improve your physical well-being in a noteworthy manner; it may even improve your mental state. Barring allergies and sensitivities, there are likely to be few counter-indications.
There is a medical practice in the Freeport area in which farm shares at a local CSA are part of their preventative medicine plan, as are regular appointments with a nutritionist. Can a prescription for kale be far behind? Physician, heal thyself. Stop by the Presque Isle Farmers’ Market in the Aroostook Centre Mall parking lot any Saturday morning to select your “drugs of choice” from the multiple venders … fresh, natural, locally grown and produced. Eat all you want; we’ll make more.
Now that is a prescription that is sure to satisfy!
