Edison Phonograph: portable music — The advertisement from The Houlton Music Store reads: “Take an Edison Phonograph with you to your summer cottage and have the latest songs and orchestra music reproduced to you by the most famous artists. Edison Machines cost $30, $45, $60 $80 and up to $450. Edison records cost 50 cents to $3.00.”
Locally produced cigars — On account of the rapidly increasing demand for the product of ‘home made’ cigars, G. R. Avery has secured two more makers and a full crew of eight hands are busy turning out Big H, Club and Cobblers.”

Old Home Week celebrated at Island Falls — Island Falls celebrated Old Home Week last Wednesday and Tuesday with a varied program featuring a young people’s parade, water sports, ball games and races of various kinds. The log rolling was won by John Ryan; canoe race, Tom Hillman and Ray Smith; tub race, Ralph Edwards; and the swimming race, Daniel Emery, first, Joe Emerson, second, and Ernest McNally, third.
Dunns to open funeral home — After years of planning and searching for the right location, the Dunn Furniture Company have purchased Fred Cates’ home on Park street next to the residence of Donald Dunn. The funeral home is to be finished in about one and one half months. Two of the main features will be the very homelike atmosphere and the music.

Armyworms on the march — Highly destructive army worms have been reported in the Southern Aroostook area. Kenneth S. Chapman, area potato specialist, said the armyworms were found Monday in Stacyville, Tuesday on corn in Smyrna, and Wednesday morning in Houlton and Littleton.
Bear kill report — The Fish and Game Department in Augusta has reported that hunters and trappers in Maine killed 56 black bear during the months of May and June. Eleven of these bear were reported to be in the 300-pound or better weight class. Twenty five of the 56 animals were taken from Aroostook County.

Smyrna to mark 150th birthday — Continuing with the celebration of Smyrna’s 150th birthday, Saturday, Aug. 19, has been set aside for a “Friends of Smyrna Field Day” to be held at the Lilley Farm on the Smyrna Center Road, formerly owned by Nehemiah Leavitt, one of Smyrna’s first settlers.
Houlton Regional adds new mammography unit — With the addition of a Women’s Health Suite, including a new dedicated mammography unit, Houlton Regional Hospital has made the commitment to address some of the personal health care needs unique to women.
