To the editor:
In a few days, Yorks Books store will close. Personally, I find this sad — a big part of Houlton’s history for 46 years is going. Yorks, to me, is more than books and cards. Lynn York, in many ways, is Houlton, Maine, to visitors. I’ve watched him many times with folks visiting, making them feel right at home, just as he did with me 10 years ago.
All these new electronic “gadgets” — electronic books eReaders, tablets — and a poor economy have hurt Lynn’s business. Electronic book — how do you dog-ear a page or swat a fly with that?
Progress, so-called progress, may be great for some, but sadly progress has claimed an icon of Market Square. Stopping in to just say “Hello,” Lynn always took time to talk, laugh and teach you some history — town, county, world — but above all, he always treated you as a friend. Market Square’s loss will be his next venture’s gain, and Market Square will be a little — a lot — less busy. Yorks will be missed.
