FORT FAIRFIELD – Frederick G. “JR” McGillan Jr., 49, husband of Janet A. (Virtanen) McGillan, passed away Friday morning, July 25, 2014, at The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle, following an extended illness. He was born October 28, 1964, in Fort Fairfield, the son of Frederic G. Sr. and Josephine A. (Gulliver) McGillan.
JR was a graduate of Fort Fairfield High School, class of 1983, where he excelled in both golf and basketball. He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Maine at Orono in 1987, where he played on the UMaine Golf Team and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. JR was the owner and operator of McGillan, Inc., Fort Fairfield. He was a very successful businessman, completing numerous large excavating jobs throughout northern Maine. In addition, JR was very instrumental in the Fort Fairfield Pool and Gazebo projects, where he generously gave both his time and equipment. JR was a member of the Fort Fairfield Lions Club, where he served in several capacities including multiple terms as president, the Fort Fairfield Snowmobile Club, and was a 4th Degree Knight, affiliated with the Fort Fairfield Knights of Columbus Council No. 1753. JR also served his community in numerous capacities, including serving on the Fort Fairfield Utilities District Board of Directors, the Fort Fairfield Zoning Board, and the St. Denis Catholic Church Finance Committee. He and McGillan Inc. were honored in 2007 as the Fort Fairfield Business of the Year; in addition, JR was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International. JR loved golfing, racing, fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, and spending time at his family’s Long Lake camp. JR loved sports and was a dedicated fan of the Cowboys, Patriots and Red Sox. JR will be remembered by all as a true Fort Fairfield community leader, as well as an outstanding and loving son, husband, father, brother, uncle and friend to all who knew him.
He was married to Janet A. Virtanen on June 22, 1991, and had been a lifelong communi-cant of the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, Fort Fairfield.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Janet; two sons, Shane and Jared McGillan; one daughter, Kellyn McGillan, all of Fort Fairfield; his mother, Josephine McGillan of Portland; his father, Frederic G. McGillan Sr. and his wife, Gwen, of Cross Lake; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Lori McGillan of Frisco, TX, Deborah and Jonathan Roark of Aledo, TX, Lisa and Stephen O’Toole of Kingston, NH; three nieces, Abigail Roark of Aledo, TX, Haley and Sydney O’Toole of Kingston, NH; and his mother-in-law, Donna Virtanen of Caribou. He also leaves behind his faithful German Shepherd “Max” as well as several in-laws, extended family members and many many dear friends.
Friends called Monday evening, July 28, 2014, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, 147 Main Street, Fort Fairfield with the Rev. Jean-Paul Labrie celebrant. Interment followed at the St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments was held after the interment service at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Council No. 1753, 260 Main Street, Fort Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may contribute in memory of JR to Aroostook Cancer Care, P.O.
