CARIBOU, Maine — Last Wednesday, the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department hosted the Aroostoook County doubles tennis tournament at the Teague Park tennis courts for area youths between the ages of 8-18.
There were over 30 participants from Caribou, Fort Fairfield, Madawaska and Presque Isle. Players competed in 12 and under, 13-15, and 16-18 male/female age brackets by playing eight-game pro sets in all matches.
Teams earned two points for every first-place finish and one point for a runner-up in the County singles (held at the UMPI courts on July 22) and doubles tournaments. Caribou took the lead following the singles tournament with 13 points, while Presque Isle grabbed second place with five.
At the end of the doubles tournament, Caribou added 15 more points and ended with a final point total of 28. Presque Isle was held scoreless and finished in second place with five points.
This marked the 32nd consecutive year that Caribou has taken home the team title after the annual youth recreation department tennis tournaments.
In the 12-and-under girls’ division, two teams from Caribou made it to the finals as Madison Stratton and Livia Bouchard defeated teammates Sage Dubay and Ashlyn Bouchard, 8-2.
The 12-and-under boys’ bracket had only one entrant vying for the title, with Luke Beidelman and Tanner Prashaw winning by default.
In the 13-15 girls’ division, two teams from Caribou reached the finals. Gabrielle Marquis and Ciara Richards outlasted teammates Hailey Holmquist and Sarah Nouhan, 8-4.
The 13-15 boys’ bracket had five teams competing for the top spot. In the end, two teams from Caribou entered the finals. Parker Deprey and Sawyer Deprey applied a consistent combination of power and finesse to defeat teammates Alec Cyr and Seth Beidelman, 8-3.
There was only one team entered in the 16-18 girls’ division. Madelynn Deprey and Caiah Rosado of Caribou won by default.
In the 16-18 boys’ bracket, Michael Marquis and Ethan Plourde of Caribou also won by default.
Other players from Caribou were Ethan Holdsworth and Sebastian Marquis.
Competing for Presque Isle were Andre Daigle, Brandon McKnight, Colin Daigle, Isaac Madore, Sarah Morneault and Hilary Boucher. Madawaska’s participants were Katelyn Ouellette, Alexis Cyr, Emma Pelletier and Ivy Pederson. Amanda and Jessica Halsey represented Fort Fairfield.
The Caribou tennis team is coached by John Habeeb, Carlee Pinette, and Michael Marquis.
