TOPS hold meeting
Today’s meeting was the first for Betty or Bessie Wyman as leader of our Take Off Pounds Sensibly, Chapter 0233, when we met on Friday, Aug. 8. Fourteen TOPS were weighed plus three KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly). Loser of the week was Mildred Gagnon with runner-up Marsha Reed.
Roll call was given and then the skinny dish drawing revealed a “held over.” The 50/50 drawing went to Diane Folsom, also the outgoing leader.
Joanne Scott gave her weight report as well as the latest contest results. She reminded us there would be three more weeks in this contest.
Receiving charms from charm lady, Barbara Whited were Brenda Lacostic and Charlotte Marley, as well as Lois Downing, and Joyce Estey. Barbara had a call from headquarters about charm bracelets informing her that bracelet charms are no longer available.
Shirley Ethier sent us a message via Facebook that she is in the area and wished everyone the best. Shirley is a former TOPS member who recently moved to Florida.
After a brief meeting, Sarah Sternlieb talked to us on the subject of “Make a healthy plate,” concerning vegetables, fruits, grains, protein and dairy, relative to the right balance of foods. Questions and answers were given and we filled out a questionnaire about the program. Sarah promised to come back and talk about other subjects; her topics were fast and to the point. We gathered at Janette Nelson’s cottage at Drews Lake, for a potluck dinner. Several years have passed since our last excursion at her home and it was a delightful time with nearly 20 guests.
Weigh-in on Fridays is 8-8:45 a.m. followed by a meeting at 9 a.m., lasting about an hour. If you need more information on the chapter, you may call Betty Ivey at 532-9653 or Charlotte Marley at 757-8483. Come, enjoy and take off weight.
Island Falls News
Tom Hawkes has been a recent visitor at my home and while here attended the committal services for his uncle, James Hawkes.
On Aug. 3, Clayton Webb was a guest of honor at an open house/belated birthday party held at the snowmobile club house from 3-8 p.m. Clayton’s birthday was in February, but due to inclement weather it was decided by his wife, Charlene, to wait until summer. This turned out to be a good idea and around 85 people came to congratulate Clayton on turning 90. Mary and John Willette from Stacyville provided music for the affair, and other members of the former Country Jamboree group. Clayton and Charlene’s niece and family, Greg and Darlene Kenny, with Trey and Shawna and Ben Rogers arrived from Bangor to celebrate the occasion and to enjoy the singing and dancing.
During the evening refreshments were served by various members of the former Jamboree group and this included a large birthday cake made by Ruth Frazier. Must be sure to add that Clayton was asked to be in the parade during the last day of Summerfest and therefore he was happy to comply and rode in one of Island Falls’ fire trucks waving to all good-wishers as he rode by.
In my last column I’m afraid I made a blunder when I wrote about the Dunphy reunion. It should have read that Evelyn Dunphy was the main organizer of the reunion and for my error I apologize. Hopefully, I will make no more errors.
I still have several hummingbirds who are busily draining the syrup from my feeders and one day I watched a gray squirrel as he decided he wanted a taste of the hummingbirds syrup. But he could find no place to hang onto on my feeder and he fell with loud thump right to the ground. I haven’t seen him try it again. The only thing he does is eat all the sunflower seeds before the small birds get around in the a.m.
My friendly calico cats are still around, waiting patiently by the barn some times and also in my large back yard. I saw one yesterday and watched him make a big leap after some small animal. I don’t think he was successful as he went back into his usual crouch, patiently waiting for something to come his way.
