During the weekend of Aug. 16 there were many guests at my home, which included son, Tom, great-grandson, Joshua, from Glenburn, Maurine Hannaford, from Standish, and from New Hampshire Phyllis (Donham) Jenkins, Joanne and Ed Wood, Christine and Lynn Perkins and Riva Batcheldor, Ted and Terry Pettengill, Patten.
A family barbecue was to be held at the family cottage on Mattawamkeag Lake but due to inclement weather it was held on my lawn, where there was a large awning attached to a large camper brought by son, Tom, and where everyone took refuge when it poured, Thankfully everyone had eaten by then and an evening of reminiscing and story telling was thoroughly enjoyed. The On Monday, Aug. 18, about 5 p.m. the group drove down to the local golf course restaurant, The Maine Slice, and enjoyed a great dinner prepared by owner, Rick Lane and this time there was no rain to run through and everyone had another fun evening.
Still have my chickadees and gold finch at my feeders and, as usual, the gray squirrel showed up, too, to finish what the birds had left. Judy, my next-door neighbor, has seen the doe and her two fawns on her lawn lately and I spied them down back the other day, so guess we still do have some deer in our area. I haven’t seen a groundhog around lately so maybe the friendly calico cats who visit my area often have frightened him off. Finally got all my lawn mowed and the skunks have finally arrived, as I discovered a lot of holes in my lawn where they have been busy digging for grubs. Was congratulating myself too early, I guess, as it’s been quite awhile with no holes — now there are many. I will have to go out and fill them in.
