The Class D teams in Aroostook County have played two weeks’ worth of games and now Class B Presque Isle has finally gotten its season underway.
The Wildcats opened on the road Tuesday with a doubleheader up north against the Fort Kent Warriors. The home portion of the schedule begins Thursday for the girls and Friday for the boys as both Caribou Viking teams pay a visit to the Gehrig T. Johnson Athletic Complex for 7 p.m. contests.
The Central Aroostook Panthers were able to give first-year coach Cody Tompkins his second consecutive road victory to begin the season as they tipped Fort Fairfield last Tuesday, 4-3, in their only game of the week. The CA girls got into the win column for the first time by blanking FF, 1-1. The teams hosted Washburn in a doubleheader Tuesday before playing the next five on the road.
Washburn’s Mackenzie Worcester continued her torrid start. After recording 10 goals in the first two games of the season, Worcester was held without a goal against Van Buren but came through with four more tallies against Hodgdon. The Beaver boys have now won three straight after the season-opening loss to the Panthers.
Ashland made its season debut early last week with home games against Easton, with the boys playing to a tie and the girls picking up a 5-1 triumph. The two schools squared off again Tuesday on the Bears’ home field.
Summaries of games played last week are as follows:
Easton boys 3, Ashland 3
At Ashland last Tuesday, Cody Blair scored three goals to rally Ashland from a 2-0 deficit to tie the defending Eastern Maine runners-up Bears in the mutual opener.
Jarrett Beaulier and Michael Cook recorded assists for Ashland.
Cody Halvorson scored two goals for Easton and Drew Sotomayor added another. Logan Halvorson notched an assist.
Tim Tarr made 14 saves in goal for Ashland and Jake Flewelling stopped 16 shots for Easton.
Central Aroostook boys 4, Fort Fairfield 3
At Fort Fairfield last Tuesday, the visiting Panthers held on for their second victory behind Taylor Campbell’s goal with 45 seconds remaining in regulation.
CA led 3-1 behind goals by Alex Boulier, Dustin Pryor and Dane Kingsbury, but the hosts fought back as Johnny Theriault and Isaac Cyr scored goals five minutes apart late in the second to tie it.
Ashland girls 5, Easton 1
Mackenzie Carter and Savannah Flint scored two goals each and Cassidy Pelletier had the other goal as Ashland had a successful home opener last Tuesday.
Assisting on two of the goals were Caitlin Paradis and Morgan Doughty. Scoring the lone goal for Easton in the first half was Kaylee Carter.
Easton goalie Taylor Howe made 15 saves on 22 shots, while Megan Cote made nine saves on 10 shots for the Hornets.
Easton girls 2, Fort Fairfield 2
On Saturday at Easton, Taylor Churchill scored the tying goal with 12 minutes remaining on the scoreboard to erase a two-goal deficit and send the Tiger girls into overtime against their Route 1A rivals, the Bears.
Chelsey Pelkey scored the other Fort goal off an assist from Gracie Griffeth for 1-1-1 Fort Fairfield. Their goalie, Megan Jellison made 16 saves on 30 shots.
For the Bear girls, also 1-1-1, Isabelle Morin netted the first goal, unassisted, at the 20:58 mark of the opening half. The other Easton goal was booted by Taylor Brown 13 minutes later, off a Morin assist. Goalie Taylor Howe turned back 23 of 31 Tiger attempts.
Central Aroostook girls 1, Fort Fairfield 0
Karli Levesque scored 17:20 into the first half on an assist from Caitlyn Harris for the only goal of the game as the Panthers prevailed at Fort Fairfield last Tuesday.
April Santiago stopped all 12 shots she faced for the shutout in goal for CA.
“The key to this game was the strong play of our defense to stay compact and to make Fort shoot from outside,” said Panther coach Joe Levesque. “Our midfield did a better job playing both ends of the field, giving our offense opportunities to put the ball in the net.”
Washburn girls 3, Van Buren 0
At Van Buren last Wednesday, Joan Overman scored all three goals to propel Washburn to the win. Kristen Sarmiento and Worcester each had an assist for the Beavers.
Grace Braley made two saves on three shots for Washburn, while Courtney Parent had 24 saves on 32 shots for Van Buren.
Washburn boys 4, Van Buren 1
Noah Caron scored three goals to lead Washburn to victory at Van Buren last Wednesday. McCall Turner added a goal for the Beavers while Noah Farley had two assists and Kenny Irving and Michael Ericson one assist each.
Thomas Lajoie scored in the second half for Van Buren, assisted by Brandon Sytulek.
Easton boys 3, Limestone-MSSM 0
Jordan White and Noah Hanscomb netted first-half goals and Cody Halvorson picked up an insurance goal after intermission as the Bears blanked the Eagles in Limestone Thursday.
Trevor Hathaway recorded an assist in the win and goalkeeper Flewelling stopped 10 of 12 shots.
Dylan Nadeau had 22 saves on 26 shots for Limestone-MSSM, which was making its season debut.
Easton boys 2, Fort Fairfield 1
On Saturday, Logan and Cody Halvorson scored first-half goals less then eight minutes apart to propel the Bears to a win over the visiting Tigers.
Theriault netted the lone Ft. Fairfield goal with 28:36 left to play in the first half but the lead was short lived as L. Halvorson notched his goal at the 17:21 mark. C. Halvorson’s goal about seven minutes later sealed the victory for 2-0-1 Easton. He was assisted by Jason Gurley.
Flewelling turned back seven of 10 Tiger shots while Dalton Cassidy made 15 saves on 25 shots for Fort, who dropped to 1-2 on the young season.
Easton girls 6, Limestone-MSSM 0
At Limestone Thursday, Kylee Carter scored four goals to help the Easton Bears roll past Limestone-MSSM.
Emma Bonner scored Easton’s first goal and Nichole Dudley chipped in with a goal. Taylor Brown added an assist and goalkeeper Blake Bradley finished with seven saves on nine shots.
Goalkeeper Jackie Peers made 34 saves on 43 shots for the Eagles.
Washburn boys 5, Hodgdon 0
At Washburn Friday, Alex Pelletier scored three goals to lead the Beavers past the Hawks. Caron and Andrew Gumprecht each added a goal for Washburn, who improved to 3-1 with the triumph.
It was the first game of the season for the Hawks.
Washburn girls 10, Hodgdon 0
Worcester scored four goals and added an assist to help Washburn stay undefeated in a home game Friday.
Overman added two goals and an assist and Mikayla Churchill, Emmy Churchill, Tyra Shaw and Sarmiento each had goals for the winners. Braley had four saves on five shots in goal.
Hodgdon goalkeeper Jessica Drew made 35 saves.
