100 Years Ago-Sept. 9, 1914
Aroostook Times
Of local interest — A Howard Crosby and three of the Hersey boys went fishing at Howard Brook (Littleton) Wednesday and Thursday last; they caught over 200 salmon trout. Clayton Libby, who is employed on Albert Mooers Dairy Farm Houlton, moved with his family into one of Mr. Mooers’ houses (Linneus). Mr. Walter Cone has accepted a position as clerk at the (Hodgdon) Grange Store.

Speeders warned of fines — Violators of the automobile speed laws opening cut outs in the village continue to be warned but soon warnings will cease and $10 and costs will be used in the effort by the authorities to have the ordinance observed.

Effects of war on Houlton, Maine — One situation, which affects residents of border towns, is the discount on Canadian money which varies every day. Houlton grocers report difficulty keeping up with demands by consumers for flour and sugar due to a serious shortage. Clerk of Courts Walter B. Clark reports a great increase in inquiries about naturalization.

Lights on for Labor Day safety — Police Chief Arthur C. Libby and enforcement officials are asking highway users to cooperate in the annual “Lights on for Safety” campaign over the Labor Day weekend. Drivers were asked to turn their headlights on low beam while driving during daylight hours 4 p.m. Friday throughout Labor Day.
Canadian workers recruited for harvest — The Farm Labor Office in Houlton has opened for the harvest season, with plans underway for supplying upwards of 7,000 Canadian workers for the County’s 1964 potato harvest. About 1,000 of the Canadian workers will be recruited at the Houlton port.

Rev. Murchie returns for Hodgdon celebration — Rev. and Mrs. Raymond Murchie of Ellsworth will be special guests at the Hodgdon United Methodist Church on Sept. 10. Rev Murchie, a retired United Methodist minister, was born and raised in Hodgdon and attended the church as a youth. He will be guest speaker as part of the church’s sesquicentennial celebration.
Tanya Tucker, Charlie Daniels in concert — Appearing in concert on Sunday, Nov. 19, at the Forum on the fairgrounds in Presque Isle. Tickets $15.50 in advance and $17.50 the day of the show and can be purchased at York’s Book Store in Houlton.
