Knowledge is power

To the editor:
Have you ever had a conversation with your medical provider; a true conversation? Have you ever asked the questions: Why do I need this test or procedure? What are the risks if I don’t have this test or procedure done? Are there simpler, safer options? What happens if I don’t do anything? And a very important question, how much does it cost?

Opening up a conversation with your provider puts you in the driver’s seat. If you know the risks and any alternatives available you can make a wiser decision as to whether you really need the test or procedure.
There are more opportunities than ever to research conditions/treatments so you can have these conversations with your provider to make the right choice for you and your circumstances. Remember — knowledge is power! Don’t be afraid to ask questions that your provider is willing to answer. More and more providers want you to be as informed as possible and be part of making decisions about your health and future.
Consumer Reports has joined forces with Choosing Wisely campaign (an initiative of the ABIM Foundation) to bring attention to the overuse of health care services and products, including antibiotics. These reports can be found at www.consumerhealthchoices.org.
