The Southern Aroostook boys and girls soccer teams defeated Katahdin in mutual season openers last Thursday in Dyer Brook.
In the boys’ game, Parker Walker and Cameron Landry broke a scoreless first half with two second-half goals for a 4-0 victory. Jackson Mathers added an assist, while goalie Austin White had four saves.
For Katahdin, goalie Cody Brownlee stopped 13 shot attempts.
On the girls’ side, Cassidy Lyons powered the Lady Warriors to a 7-2 win with four goals. Kennedi Smith recorded a hat trick to finish the scoring.
Erin Robinson had both of Katahdin’s tallies.
On Friday night, the Houlton Shiretowners hosted the Madawaska Owls. The teams played a scoreless first half before Madawaska took the win on two second-half goals.
Ethan Wetmore and Matthew Cyr of Madawaska scored a couple of minutes apart, as Wetmore tallied an unassisted goal at 5:58 and Cyr on Lance Lavoie’s assist at 3:36.
Houlton keeper Sam Astle had three saves on six shots, while Madawaska’s goalie, Greg Cyr, stopped two of seven shots.
In the Houlton girls’ season opener, they overtook Madawaska 2-1 behind first-half goals by Emily Mooers.
Mooers scored her first tally with 19:13 left in the first half on Kolleen Bouchard’s assist and the game-winning goal with 32:57 left in regulation.
Madawaska snuck in a goal with just 1:27 left in the game by Desirae Belanger.
Houlton keeper Katie Condon made three saves against six Owl shots, while Madawaska’s Alexis Levesque had six saves on 10 shot attempts.
Madawaska is now 2-1.
The Hodgdon boys and girls soccer teams did not have much success in their first two games of the season taking losses to Easton and Washburn.
In boys’ action, the Hawks fell to host Easton 4-0 last Friday.
Tristan Larson made 15 saves for Hodgdon, while Easton goalie Jake Flewelling had six saves and earned his third shutout of the season.
The Bears were powered by Nick Clark’s first-half goal on an assist by Collin Sotomayor at the 27-minute mark, while Jordan White, assisted by Logan Halvorson, scored with 9:18 left in the first half. Halvorson took a pass for a goal from Drew Sotomayor two minutes into the second half and Easton’s final tally came from Brian Corbin off a Clark assist with 48 seconds left tin the game.
On Aug. 22, the Hawks opened the season with a 5-0 loss to host Washburn.
Alex Pelletier recorded a hat trick, while Noah Caron and Andrew Gumprecht each scored a tally for the 3-1 Beavers.
The Lady Hawks suffered their second loss of the season, 10-1, to host Easton.
The lone Hodgdon goal came on Rachel Harmon’s second-half tally.
Taylor Brown racked up five goals and Kylee Carter banged home four more for the Bears. Nicole Dudley also picked up a goal, while Isabell Morin, Kelsey Frank, Carter and Alex Allen each had assists in the game.
Hodgdon goalie Jessica Drew turned back 17 of 37 shots faced, while Easton keepers, Blake Bradley and Delaney Leach, combined for nine saves on 14 shots.
On Aug. 22, the Lady Hawks started their season with a 10-0 loss to host Washburn.
Mackenzie Worcester collected four goals and an assist, while Joan Overman scored twice and had an assist.
Hodgdon keeper Drew made 35 saves, while Washburn goalie Grace Braley stopped four of five shots.
