Wildcat soccer teams open season with victories

    The Presque Isle varsity soccer teams opened their season with road games against Fort Kent last Tuesday and followed that up with home contests against Caribou later in the week. The results were positive as both the girls and boys were victorious in all the contests.

  The Wildcat girls edged the Warriors, 2-1, thanks to a tie-breaking goal by Taylor Williams, off a Jordi Legassie assist, late in the second half.
Fort Kent took the lead on Sadie Desjardins’ first-half goal, but PI answered when Hannah Graham came through by netting a direct kick in the early stages of the second half.
Presque Isle outshot Fort Kent, 26-8, with Jillian Flynn saving six for the winners.
In the boys’ game, Alex Michaud scored twice and Ryle Mortland, Randon Mortland, Ben Nickerson and Chase Norton had single goals as PI fought back from a 3-2 deficit to come out on top, 6-3. Andrew Paterson made four saves on 12 shots in goal for the ’Cats.
On Thursday, the Wildcat girls defeated Caribou, 6-2. Legassie had a hat trick, Graham tallied a pair of goals and Olivia Hudson closed out the scoring in the impressive victory over the rivals.
The following evening, PI outshot Caribou by a 13-4 margin en route to the 4-0 victory. Ben Nickerson scored twice to lead the Wildcat attack, with Kyle Rider and Mike McLellan scoring one each. Cooper Madore and Griffin Guerrette had assists and Paterson collected four saves for the shutout in goal. Ethan Plourde made eight saves for the Vikes.
Presque Isle will be home Saturday as Hermon comes to town for contests at 1 (girls) and 3 p.m. (boys).
Summaries of other games in the region last week are as follows:
Easton girls 10, Hodgdon 1 — Taylor Brown and Kylee Carter combined for nine of the team’s 10 goals in Friday’s home victory. Brown had five and Carter four as Easton won for the third time this season.
Nichole Dudley had the Bears’ other goal. Credited with assists on the afternoon were Isabell Morin, Kelsey Frank, Alex Allen and Carter.
Blake Bradley and Delaney Leach combined for nine saves on 14 shots for Easton, who sent 37 shot attempts at Hodgdon goalie Jessica Drew.
Easton boys 4, Hodgdon 0 — The Bears blanked the Hawks Friday behind a balanced attack. Nick Clark, Jordan White, Logan Halvorson and Brian Corbin all scored goals for the winners, who improved to 5-0-1.
Collin Sotomayor, Drew Sotomayor, Halvorson and Clark had assists and Jake Flewelling gained his third shutout of the season with six saves.
Washburn girls 3, Fort Fairfield 1 — At Washburn Thursday, Joan Overman tallied a pair of goals and Mikayla Churchill recorded two assists as the Beavers stayed unbeaten. Emmy Churchill had Washburn’s other goal and Grace Braley saved eight of 10 shots in goal.
Chelsey Pelkey converted a penalty kick for the Tigers’ only goal. Sara Watt had a busy afternoon in goal, facing 33 shots and saving 18.
Fort Fairfield boys 3, Washburn 1 — The Tigers used two second-half goals from Johnny Theriault to stop the host Beavers Thursday. Isaac Cyr scored Fort’s other goal, which came in the first half, and Cameron Bragg had the lone Beaver goal.
Easton boys 4, Wisdom 0 —The Bears dominated the Pioneers at St. Agatha Thursday as Drew Sotomayor had two goals and White and Trevor Hathaway one each. Cody Halvorson set up two of the goals. Flewelling notched the shutout with 10 saves.
Ashland girls 2, Central Aroostook 1 — Last Wednesday in Ashland, Karli Levesque put the Panthers on top early, but the Hornets came back behind goals from Mackenzie Carter and Caitlin Paradis to move to 3-0.
Ashland held a 28-4 advantage in shots on goal, with Megan Cote saving three shots for the Hornets and April Santiago 14 for CA.
Ashland boys 1, Central Aroostook 0 — The game was scoreless after regulation, but Mark Chasse scored 94 seconds into the first overtime as the Hornets bested CA last Wednesday in Ashland. The goal was set up on a Lucas Craig corner kick and an initial shot off the crossbar by Cody Blair.
Ashland’s Tim Tarr made nine saves for the shutout in goal and Hunter Crouse and Zack McClung combined for 12 for CA.
Washburn girls 3, Central Aroostook 1 — Last Tuesday, the Beaver girls overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to prevail in Mars Hill. Levesque once again gave CA the early lead, but Overman scored twice in the second half and Mackenzie Worcester had the other goal to key Washburn.
Braley made 10 saves for the Beavers and Santiago 11 for the Panthers.
Washburn boys 3, Central Aroostook 2 — Washburn scored three times in the final 14 minutes to come from behind and defeat the Panthers.
Bragg, Noah Farley and Noah Caron were the goal scorers for the Beavers. Alex Boulier had both tallies for the Panthers.
Fort Fairfield boys 4, Van Buren 3 — The Tigers won at home last Tuesday, but needed Brandon York’s overtime goal to pull if off over the Crusaders.
Theriault had a hat trick by scoring twice in the first half and adding a third in the second.
Ashland girls 7, Easton 1 — Marissa Chasse had three goals and Savannah Flint two to key Ashland past the Bears last Tuesday in Easton.
Carter and Hannah Flint both scored for the winners, with Cote making 12 saves on 18 shots for the win in goal.
Leach had the Bears’ goal off a Caitlin Monroe assist in the second half. Goalkeepers Taylor Howe and Bradley combined for 18 saves on 30 shots.
Easton boys 3, Ashland 1 — Drew Sotomayor scored goals 90 seconds apart in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and give Easton the win at home over the Hornets last Tuesday.
Logan Halvorson and Jason Gurley had the assists on the game-winning and insurance goals.
Cody Halvorson put Easton on the board off a Sotomayor assist six minutes into play, but Chasse scored off a Blair assist later in the half to tie it for Ashland.
Flewelling had seven saves on 11 shots for Easton, while Tarr stopped 13 of 21 for the Hornets.
